Ao Nang
(Krabi)

"This article is about Ao Nang Beach,
Railey Beaches and Phra Nang"

Ao Nang Beach is surrounded by breath taking, luscious hills and cliffs and tall palm trees. And not to mention, the incredible sea food served at the restaurants!

But let's face it, this beach is touristy, especially during the peak season.

The place has now targeted tourists, so there are families and elderly people everywhere. This isn't a bad thing, but it essentially means that prices are higher in Ao Nang than other non-tourist places in Thailand.

When I was there, I found it hard to believe that this place was a laid-back backpacker place a couple of years ago...!

So, why do backpackers come to here?

It's the gateway to the Krabi islands. Backpackers usually stop by this small town to get to the popular Railey Beaches, and the beautiful Phra Nang Beach.

How to get to Ao Nang

By air: Krabi International airport is the closest airport.

From Krabi you can take a taxi to town, which is located 16km from Krabi.

But the cheapest way is to board on a songthaew in Krabi town (50B per person). After 18.00 it cost 70B. It's way faster and cheaper than long-tail boats from Krabi (100 per person).

By boat: Boats from Phuket and Koh Lanta operate to Ao Nang only in the high season (duration is 2 hours). From Ko Phi Phi it takes 1,5 hours and cost 400B.

By bus: Most of the time you have to stop by Krabi to get to Ao Nang, especially on long-distance travels. From Bangkok there are government buses to Krabi and the journey takes 12 hours.

From Surat Thani there are frequent minivans to Krabi town.

I took one of those minivans from Surat Thani in December 2007. The trip was effortless, and the driver even dropped us off at the hotels/guesthouses we were going to stay at.

Important places to know about:

  • Tourist Police Emergency Phone nr: 1155
  • Krabi International Hospital, 1 km north of the town center at 325 Thanon Utrakit.

Note that the hospitals in Krabi don't have international standards. But they do handle the common health issues which a traveler may encounter.

The nearest hospitals with international standards are in Phuket.

  • ATMs and Banks along the beachside road and main road.
  • Post office on beach main road.
  • Pharmacy on the Main Rd.
  • You'll usually get internet access at the guesthouse/hotel/resort you're staying at. Otherwise, there are a few internet shops along the beachside road.
