How to get from (Goa) India to Cambodia

by Anonymous

Question: I was just contacting you for some advice on how to get from Anjuna, Goa and then to Cambodia.

In March 2010 I will be in Goa for 2 weeks and then I'm joining a orphanage project in Takeo, Cambodia for a month. This is the first time I will be backpacking and need all the advice that I can get hence the e-mail to you.

If you have any advice on how I can get there it would be much appreciated, thank you.

Answer: I researched the possibilities. Here`s what I found out:

You can decide to take the airplane to Cambodia from either Mumbai or New Delhi. The difference is that it's cheaper to travel from Mumbai . Whether you choose Mumbai or Delhi, you have to stop-over in Kuala Lumpur before you land in Phnom Penh. I haven't found any direct flights.

A tip is to look for a travel agent in Panaji, or even Anjuna, and book a ticket there to Phnom Penh. It's usually cheaper to book plane tickets locally!

Depending on your budget:

  • Take a bus or taxi from Anjuna to Panaji. Taking the bus is much cheaper, but it's usually slow and packed

  • When you're in Panaji, buy a bus ticket to Vasco Da Gama OR take the bus directly from Panaji to Mumbai.

I personally don't like the buses in India, especially the route from Mumbai to Goa. The bus driver was driving way too fast in pouring rain on curvy roads, and our so-called VIP bus was filled with cockroaches. And we had to pay 1500 Rs for a terrifying bus-ride! I enjoyed the train more -- the sleeper class wasn't so bad.

If you want to take the train:

  • From Vasco De Gama , take the train to New Delhi. The station in Delhi is called Hazrat Nizamuddin. Sleeper class cost about 500 Rs and it will take 2 and half-3 days. You can check out the price here: Indian Rail

  • From Mumbai/New Delhi, take the plane to Phnom Penh. Try Kayak.com to find the cheapest flights.

  • There are only two international airports in Cambodia: Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The closest to Takeo province is Phnom Penh.

  • From Phnom Penh, take the bus to Takeo town. Hour Lean and PPPT bus companies both run air-con buses between Phnom Penh and Takeo . They leave from the Central Station just southwest from the Central Market in PP.

    And voila, you're in Takeo!

    If you're in a hurry:

  • You can also take the plane from Goa's Dabolim Airport to Mumbai/Delhi. The airport is located 30 km near Vasco-de-Gama. I flew with Kingfisher Airlines to Jaipur once and it cost like 6100 Rs ... cheap enough!
