This article guides you through the visa requirements for a Malaysia tourist visa, and where to find a Malaysian embassy so you can actually apply for it….

Do you need a Malaysian visa?

First I will start with the rules for visa on arrival. Visa on arrival means that you get a visa stamp when you arrive in Malaysia.

So which nationalities don't need to apply for a visa before traveling to Malaysia?

Nationals of following countries don't need to apply for a visa. When you arrive at the airport/border crossing, you will only get a visa stamp which is valid for 3 months. This means that you can stay in the country for 3 months. Here we go:

Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kirgizstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyz Republic, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Morocco, Netherland, New Zealand, North Yemen, Norway, Oman, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Romania, St. Marino, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Turkey, USA, U.A.E, United Kingdom, Uruguay.

Nationals of the following countries don't require a visa to enter Malaysia for tourist purposes and the duration of stay is 1 month. The countries are :

All Asian countries except: Myanmar, Antigua & Bermuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Dominica, Ecuador, el Salvador, Estonia, Fiji, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Greece, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong (sir), Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Macau (sir), Macedonia, Malawi, Maldives, Moldova, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldavia, Monaco, Mongolia, Namibia, Nauru, Nicaragua, North Korea, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Portugal, Russia, Sao Tome & Principe, Slovenia, Solomon Island, Saint. Kits & Nevis, Saint Lucida, Saint Vincent, Sudan, Surinam, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad & Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, upper Volta, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vatican city, Venezuela, Western Samoa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Nationals of the following countries MUST have a visa to enter Malaysia for any purpose of visit. This means that you have to apply for a visa in advance BEFORE you travel to Malaysia (effective from Aug 15th, 2010).

You can no longer apply for a tourist visa when you arrive at one of the airports in Malaysia.

These countries are :

Sub Continent Nationals: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka

African Countries: Angola, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Congo Democratic Republic, Cote D'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Western Sahara.

Other Countries: Taiwan, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Peoples Republic of China.

What are the Malaysia visa requirements?

Whether you need a Malaysia visa or not, your passport or travel document must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry into Malaysia.

And remember to have more than enough with pages in your passport.

In addition to this, you should have an onward ticket to show that you're actually leaving the country (in theory).

When we traveled to Malaysia, we only showed our Norwegian passports, got a stamp each and no one checked if we had an onward ticket.

But maybe we were lucky…?

Overstay

Overstaying your Malaysia visa has its consequences.

As far as I know, if you're not caught by the Malaysian officials and you go to them, you have to pay a fine (about 30 RM per day).

However, if you're caught overstaying, the officials can detain you according to the law which opens for discretion. There have been rumors of travelers being detained for several weeks or several months, so watch your stamp…
