Looking for Mumbai accommodation?

There are many cheap guesthouses/hotels in Mumbai, especially around Colaba area -- south of Mumbai.

Even if a guesthouse advertises for "very clean rooms" or "luxury rooms" -- double check it. That's because these terms are loosely used by the Indians and doesn't necessarily mean that it really is a very clean room.

If you want to splurge and stay at a hotel, I can tell you that in general the security at the hotels has gone up after the terrorist attacks in December 2008... That's a relief!

Here are the guesthouses I stayed at:

Sea Hotel

Price per night: Rs 600 (Oct 2007)

The hotel was alright and the staff was eager to carry our bags. So the service was good. For Rs 200 each, the room was OK. It had an attached bathroom and air-con.

But we were three people who had to share a small double bed. And I remember that we woke up in the middle of the night, because we heard cockroaches crawling across the floor and inside the walls. Just the thought of it, gives me goose bumps..!

So, you really get what you paid for in Mumbai!

Sea Shore Hotel

Price per night: Rs 550 (Oct 2007)

If you just want a cheap place to stay, Sea Shore is a good option!

Seashore has an excellent location -- right in the heart of Colaba (the tourist area of Mumbai).

The Indian man behind the desk was helpful and friendly. But he did sell us bus tickets which we discovered were not sufficient to get us to Goa.

We had to pay extra when we jumped on the bus to Palolem. I don't know if the staff at Sea Shore is to blame for this because frankly, there are many touts that will try to scam you in Mumbai.

How was the room?

The room was spacious, had windows, air-con and shared bathroom. A really rundown and dirty bathroom though.

You're not the only one living there!

... There were cockroaches crawling in the halls and bathroom, and bed bugs.

After one night, one of my traveling companions woke up with bites all over her body (bed bugs).

I got bitten as well. But I covered my bed with a duvet cover I brought for the trip, so I didn't get that many bites.
