The main jetty on Koh Pha Ngan is located in Thongsala, and this is where ferries from Surat Thani, Koh Tao and Koh Samui dock. But there aren't many backpackers who actually stay in this town. They would rather stay on the beaches like Had Rin, Had Yao, Thong Nai Pan beaches.

On the other hand, Thongsala does have some few gems! :-)

What draws travelers to Thongsala is the muay thai fights. There's a small 'stadium' close to main road. If you're in Thongsala you should definitely visit the Night Market. This market lights up non-lively Thongsala every evening, and maybe you'll find something here. They have fresh food and fried bugs, souvenirs, toys, candies and much much more. I saw mostly locals at this market, and a few foreigners were testing out the bugs.

Just off the main street in Thongsala, you'll find food stalls and food vendors selling hot and cold dishes. We tried the pancakes there before the muay thai fight started. So many backpackers were here - sampling local Thai food. It's certainly cheaper than eating at fancy restaurants, which by the way dominate Koh Phangan.

  • Hot dishes: From 30 B
  • BBQ meat stick: 10-20 B
  • Fresh fruit shakes: 30 B
  • Pancakes (banana or plain): 25-30 B
  • Soft drinks in can: 10 B

    Other than that; you'll find bars, small boutique shops, banks and family shops. And also a post office. I found a nice shop selling unique clothing (dresses, t-shirts and tops) - all made by a local designer. But the clothes were a bit expensive (500B and up), so I didn't buy anything there.

    We found a small cozy bar, but we were the only people there. After a couple of Singhas, we took the songthaew back to Had Yao beach (100-150B per person).
